📰 THE FRIDAY EDITION

Fall Has Arrived in Indiana

October has officially arrived, and Indiana is settling into one of the most colorful times of the year. Across the state, communities are filling their calendars with fall festivals, pumpkin displays, historic events, craft shows, food, and outdoor activities.

For BlogBitz, October also means covered bridges, cemeteries, autumn photography, old stories, and a little bit of the unusual.

So grab a cup of coffee and stay awhile. There's plenty happening around town.

🍂 INDIANA BITZ

Covered Bridge Season Is Almost Here

The big event on the BlogBitz calendar is just one week away.

The Parke County Covered Bridge Festival runs October 9–18, 2026, bringing visitors to western Indiana for ten days of food, crafts, fall scenery, and historic covered bridges. Parke County is home to 31 historic covered bridges, and the festival spreads activities across 10 locations.

For those of us who enjoy old bridges, autumn leaves, small towns, and a little Indiana history, October doesn't get much better.

Covered Bridge Corner:
Keep your camera handy. Some of the best photographs aren't necessarily the famous bridges—they're the roads, farms, barns, creeks, and changing leaves you encounter along the way.

🎃 THIS WEEKEND IN INDIANA

Metamora Canal Days

October 2–4

Historic Metamora is celebrating Canal Days this weekend with vendors, antiques, handmade crafts, food, and the atmosphere of an old canal town. Visit Indiana lists the event among its 2026 fall festivals.

Potter's Bridge Fall Festival

Saturday, October 3 • 11 a.m.–5 p.m.

Hamilton County's Potter's Bridge Park hosts its annual Fall Festival on Saturday. The event combines the historic bridge and park setting with autumn activities.

Pumpkin Path — Fort Wayne

Beginning Friday, October 2

The Foellinger-Frieman Botanical Conservatory's Pumpkin Path returns Friday with an autumn display featuring pumpkins, fall foliage, and seasonal decorations.

👻 ODD BITZ

Something Strange Is Happening in the Science World

Sometimes reality is strange enough without adding a ghost.

Researchers have reported two newly discovered species of sea spider in the Pacific Northwest—and Smithsonian describes the creatures as looking like something straight out of a horror movie.

Meanwhile, archaeologists have uncovered evidence suggesting that cacao was being consumed in what is now Georgia about 1,000 years ago—an intriguing discovery that adds another piece to the history of food and cultural connections in the Americas.

BlogBitz ruling:
The natural world continues to produce things that sound like they belong in a monster movie.

🍁 AUTUMN WATCH

The Season of Old Cemeteries

October is a perfect month for exploring historic cemeteries—not because every cemetery is haunted, but because many are outdoor history books.

Look for:

  • Unusual grave markers

  • Family names repeated across generations

  • Old symbols carved into stones

  • Weathered dates

  • Victorian monuments

  • Iron fencing

  • Forgotten sections of older cemeteries

  • Trees and landscapes that have been there for generations

And sometimes the most interesting discovery is simply finding a cemetery you've driven past a hundred times without noticing.

Remember: cemeteries are places of respect. Explore responsibly, stay on public property, and leave the stones and grounds exactly as you found them.

🧩 FRIDAY PUZZLE BITZ

Ghost Hunter's Crossword

This week's BlogBitz puzzle is for the paranormal crowd.

It's not impossibly hard—and it's not a giveaway either.

Think about the vocabulary of ghost hunting:

ACROSS

  1. A person who investigates reported hauntings

  2. A device sometimes used to record unusual sounds

  3. A spirit said to remain in a particular location

  4. A mysterious photograph containing an unexplained shape

DOWN

  1. A recording allegedly containing a spirit's voice

  2. A device that detects changes in electromagnetic fields

  3. A nighttime investigation of a supposedly haunted location

  4. A word often used for an unexplained apparition

How many can you solve without looking anything up?

📚 THE BOOKSHELF

October is also a busy month for books.

Here at BlogBitz, we're keeping an eye on unusual stories, paranormal subjects, mysteries, children's adventures, puzzles, and Indiana history.

And sometimes a good old-fashioned book is still the best way to spend a rainy October afternoon.

🛍️ THE BLOG BITZ DESK

Things We're Working On

The BlogBitz idea is growing beyond a traditional blog.

We're building it more like a small online town newspaper—with different sections people can visit depending on what interests them.

Today's departments include:

INDIANA — Places, history, festivals and interesting Hoosier stories
ODD BITZ — Strange, unusual and fascinating stories
PUZZLES — Crosswords, word searches and other printable fun
BOOKS — Books, authors and stories
SEASONAL — Fall, Halloween and holiday features
COVERED BRIDGE CORNER — Indiana's historic bridges
WHAT'S HAPPENING — Events and things worth checking out

That's the idea behind BlogBitz:

A little newspaper for the internet.

☕ THE FRIDAY THOUGHT

You don't always have to travel far to find something interesting.

Sometimes it's an old cemetery down the road.

Sometimes it's a covered bridge you've passed for years.

Sometimes it's a strange story in the newspaper.

And sometimes it's just an autumn afternoon, a cup of coffee, and a reason to slow down.

That's what BlogBitz is about.

See you around town.
